Heiligkreuz Monastery in Cham

The Heiligkreuz monastery (Holy Cross monastery), Cham, Switzerland, the birth place of our community, was founded by Fr. Josep Leonz Blum in 1830. In time of its foundation the monastery was aimed to help the poor women in Baldegg. It was, however, moved to Cham due to the hard condition of politics and religion and later joined the Olivetan Benedictine Federation in 1892.

The Heiligkreuz monastery was not originally founded for foreign missions, but sent 6 sisters to Yanji diocese, China in Sept. 1931 in response to the needs of the Church and that time. It became the foundation of our community. Marking the 50th anniversary of the coming to Korea on Sept. 14, 1981, it made our community fully independent. Separated from each other, the two have established ¡®the Congregation of the Holy Cross¡¯.

With gratitude towards our maternal community that helped our congregation grow, we assign our sisters to Heiligkreuz Monastery in Cham, Switzerland. A few of our sisters have been living with the Swiss sisters, helping them with various works inside the monastery since May 1983.
